March NMNL Unboxing

WOOT!! I am so happy! Not happy because of the content of March's No Make No Life box, but the fact that I got it before most subscribers! It's always been the situation where I would order something as soon as it comes out, but I would receive it well after everyone else and it bums me out a little bit. But that's what you get for having Canada Post as your postal service. -__-.

Anyways, with NMNL, if you subscribe near the beginning of each month, it's most likely your next month's NMNL box is shipped out toward the beginning of the month. That sounds confusing, so let me use this months' box as an example.

Everyone have up to Feb 28th to order the March box, which has the theme of sakura. Then everyone is supposedly guaranteed to receive their boxes by end of March. But in my case, I accidentally renewed my subscription on February 3rd, the March box was shipped out Feb 8th, and I received it Feb 21st.  So I got it before most of the subscribers. Yay!

Enough gloating, let's move on to the contents. As I have said the theme for March is sakura, as it is usually the beginning of the sakura season in March. I was quite excited by the theme and accidentally renewed my subscription, paying full price of US$29.99, or C$41.67. Uh,.. Damn you exchange rate, it really added up the cost.. ;___;

The box was so pink! I don't usually like pink but I loved opening up the black box to see so much shades of pink! And as soon as I opened the box, this light sweet floral smell hits my nose. It just really add to the sakura theme of the box! However! There are couple of items of concern! But we shall discuss down below.

Goshu Sakura bath salt

 Oh this packaging is gorgeous! 😍😍The large sakura blossoms on top and the fine sakura outlines on the bottom! So gorgeous! 

I am confused regarding the texture these bath salts are supposed to be. I can see the chunky sea salts, but it is soaked in a pink liquid? Is it supposed to be "wet"? I thought bath salts are usually dry. No matter, it is just an interesting texture to be packaged in.

This cost 145 Yen, or US$1.45. (I know the conversion rate is different, but for argument sake, let's say it is 100 Yen is US$1.00.I'll use the current day conversion rate for the total at the bottom of this post.) 

Ichikami Moisturizing shampoo & conditioner travel set

 This is such a cute set! And I think the smell is actually coming from this set! 

There is actually quite a bit of floral ingredients in this set! If I am reading the chart correctly, there is sakura, camellia, peony and different types of rice in it. It sounds promising! I can't wait to take it with me next time I travel somewhere. 

This cost 270 yen, or US$2.70. Okay price for a travel size I guess. 

Sakura Harenohi hand care gift pack 

 This is a gorgeously packed hand care set, with a hand cream and hand soap. Not sure about including hand soap, but alright. I can deal with that. 

 Downside is that these are dinky little things! I have put the Missha Love Secret hand cream and a special quarter down for sizing references. As you can see, it's TINY at 11-12mL each. 

An issue with this gift set is that the products are actually made in China. Nothing against China, I mean I am made in China. 😆 But I wasn't expecting a Chinese product in a box of Japanese stuff. 

This set cost 648 Yen, or US$6.48.

Maru Tatsu Sakura hand towel & cleaning cloth

 This is a pretty looking set of towel and cloth. It's big enough to fit the bottom of the box, so I feel like the little pile of blue shredded paper was unnecessary. 

The towel on the left is probably a microfiber cleaning cloth, as it has similar feel to it. It is not a very big towel, it is roughly the size of the box. The towel on the right is a smoother feeling towel that is supposedly made for hand and face, but I would probably just go with hand to be on the safe side. 

This little kit cost 173 Yen, or US$1.73, and it's made in China of course. 

Gensen Labo hydrating sea kelp toner

This is where I am starting to have a problem with the content. First of all, this has NOTHING to do with the theme of sakura! Sea kelp and sakura are nowhere close to each other! Secondly, I chided Kira Kira Crate for their continuous usage of Pure Smile/Choosy products, including one of their sister brands 5Lanc. Then NMNL box just have to put in Gensen Labo, which is also one of Pure Smile's brands. =__=. 

Don't get me wrong, I like Pure Smile. I have nothing against putting in quality products at a low cost. Heck, this toner got 4.9/5 stars on Cosme. But I do have a problem when it is put in there for the sake of putting in an "expensive" and large item rather than continuing with the theme. Everything was following along with the theme and then bam! Toner made with sea kelp from Hokkaido! Just because! No reason at all! That makes me grouchy. 

Oh, this is the most expensive item in the box at 980Yen or US$9.80. 😒😒

Choosy peach lip pack & gold pearl lip pack

Urg, This is the second item in the box that I had the most problem with! Again with the Pure Smile/Choosy items! I'll be okay with it had it gone along with the theme. But it doesn't! Peach and gold pearl has nothing to do with the sakura theme! WTF! 😡😠 Heck, I even jokingly added an line about hoping they won't include the Pure Smile facial mask in sakura in my email to Tokyotreat. I didn't think my joke would be true and they actually put in Pure Smile/Choosy masks in there! It's nice they included two, but come on, these can be easily found on eBay. I am not pleased. 

The lip packs are 120Yen each, so 240Yen/US$2.40 in total. Oh, these are made in Korea for those who cares about where it is made. This is also probably why it's included in some Korean boxes. 

Overall Value

The total value for the March box is.... 2,456 Yen. Using today's exchange rate as per Google, it is US$21.69/C$28.50. Considering I paid US$29.99/C$41.67 for this box. I am more than annoyed that I spent US$8.30/C$13.17 on shipping. Yah I get it, these free shipping boxes include shipping in its sale prices. But I would've liked a little bit more value to my box, especially when the company is bulk buying these products at a discount. -___-. 

Value aside, my view on the March box is meh.😑😑 4/7 items hit the theme of sakura (I am counting the two lip packs as two separate items). 3/7 items are made in Japan (bath salt, hair & conditioner set, and the toner). I would most likely use all of the items except for the bath salts so it's not a bad box in that aspect.

I am just a bit burned by the fact that majority of the box are low costing, and the fact that 3/7 items are from Pure Smile. I chided Kira Kira about it so I am not afraid to chide NMNL about it too. STOP PUTTING IT PURE SMILE ITEMS! Most of us know that this brand is used often due to the cheapness factor! It just annoys me, to the point that I am not going to resubscribe until I see improvements in product selection. I don't want to pay $40+ CAD for a box that has mostly Pure Smile products, which I can easily obtain from eBay and other online retailers. 

Update: Peeps, don't blog while you are upset... >_< The end result is an angry rant like above.. T__T Now that I am a bit calmer, I would just like to re-state some of my comments.. 

I would like both Kira Kira & NMNL to stop putting in so much Pure Smile products for the simple reason that they are cheap items. I really have nothing against Pure Smile. I really have been hoarding the discontinued snail hand cream and lip treatment. So yes, some of them work pretty well and it's a good thing that the brand is easily accessible. But PLEASE include it if it goes with the theme! That's what got me so angry. The curation was really on point with the sakura theme! I didn't even care that the products were low value, I was just happy for the pretty pinks and sakuras that I was promised. Till I hit the three Pure Smile items which just seemed to be thrown in there for no reason. =__= So.. If you want to include Pure Smile/Choosy products, at least make sure it goes along with the theme... 

That being said, I am not going to re-subscribe. I am going to wait a few months and see how it goes before I consider it again. Because $40 a month for a mystery box is a bit much. 

Samples Samples Samples!

I really do have a hoarding issue. I hoard masks, skincare items, and apparently samples. I went through my stash of skincare items, and found out I had quite a bit of masks, skincare items and samples that are either expired or close to expiration. I don't mind using expired stuff, I know, that's so bad of me when I am running a blog. But I don't want my money to go to waste... T__T

Anyways, samples are the hardest to deal with in regards with expiration dates. There is usually none on there, so I have to remember when I get them. Given how I keep on just throwing them into the pile whenever I get new samples, I have absolutely no idea which are new and which are old. Thank goodness for non-reactive skin! I decided to use a few of the samples all at once to get through them. Today is mostly masks. 😝

Just want to note that I have non-reactive skin, I only usually get breakouts from poor eating habits or hormonal ones. So I am comfortable with using expired products as they tend to not cause a reaction. That being said, you know what is best for your skin, so use your judgement when it comes to using expired products. Now, shall we continue?

I started off with the Chosungah Original Raw Black Bubble. This is a part of a set that I got from Memebox years ago. Yah.. It's quite expired... Oh well. 🙈

This is a runny, black, semi-transparent liquid. It smells like... um... first thing that popped into my head is my dad's aftershave when I was growing up.. So.. not a good scent association.

This cleanser foams up nicely. Just rubbing my hands together with some water produces really nice fine bubbles, which is quite nice. It leaves my skin feeling a bit more clean than COSRX's Good Morning Low pH Cleansing gel. The COSRX gel is nice but it leaves this slick feeling on my skin like I haven't washed it all off, no matter how much I rinsed. The Black Bubble cleanser feels just as nice as the COSRX cleanser, but without the slick feeling. I like this cleanser but the smell and the association of that smell kind of makes me want to chuck it in the bin. 😕

Next up, The Face Shop Mild Papaya Peeling Gel

I have no idea where I got this from to be honest. So I have no idea how old it is.. 😖

Anyways... This is a clear gel that has a sweet floral smell to it. It started to ball up as soon as it came in contact with my skin. I honestly think it's not taking off much dead skin if just contact will make it ball up. It's one of those peeling gels that just kind of balls up with itself when rubbed, and takes off a little bit of dead skin through friction. Don't think I will pick up a full sized product for this.

Tonymoly Tomatox Magic Massage Pack

I got this in a pack of 10 samples, forgot about what it is for and never used it. Thank you Google for instructions and purpose of this product! The actual container is super adorable, as it is in the shape of a tomato!

This is a white gloop, which reminds me of liquid white-out. Hahaha. 😅 Anyways, you are supposed to massage it as you put it on your face, and then leave it on for 5-10 minutes before rinsing it off. It has a sweet smell that does go away after a while. It kind of reminds me of a mud mask but it is a thinner consistency and spreads well. One sample pack was more than sufficient for my face.

I think it made my skin look a bit brighter. 😕 But I don't think I will continue to use it as I am lazy and don't like to wash my face more than once. So I chucked the rest of the samples out.

Pure Smile Muddy Girl

This is a clay mask from Japanese brand Pure Smile, and I got it years ago. Thing about Japanese cosmetics is that they don't like to put expiration dates on products so I have no idea if it is expired. Most likely it is expired. I am 90% sure it is expired as it now has new packaging. Oh well.  😑

When I opened the pack, I thought it dried up and hardened. But that's not the case at all. It is super smooth and spreads very nicely. I do find the smell a little funky, something I have smelt before but can't be sure what it is.

I used another Muddy Girl mask before and learned that I should just use it in one go or else it will dry out, even with plastic wrap. So I slapped all of the container onto my face, which resulted in a very thick application.

As the mask dries, my face starts to feel cool. I kind of like that. 😄

As per the instructions, you are supposed to keep it on for 10-15 minutes. I had it on for 10 minutes because I was impatient. It started to dry up in the areas that has a thinner layer while the thicker area is still wet. It also started to feel a bit tight on my skin so I washed it off. It made my skin feel sooo smooth afterwards.. 😍 These doesn't seem easy to find so I am not going to be repurchase.

Tonymoly Gold 24K Mask 

Once again I didn't know when or where I got this sample from. When I squished this out of the sample pack, first thought was ... is this gold 💩? It also looks like those cheap plastic items trying to pass off as gold coloured items.

Despite its looks, it goes on very smooth and one sample pack is enough for a very thin layer on my face. Does that mean I have a big face? 😕😕 Nonetheless, the gold on my skin makes me feel so fancy! 😎

The instruction is that you are supposed to leave it on until it is dried, and then wash it off. But due to such a thin layer being applied, it dried off very quickly. I can touch it and it doesn't feel sticky to the touch, nor does it feel tight on my skin.

Once I washed it off, my skin felt a bit tighter. I didn't notice much difference, but when I took flash photography, my skin sparkled a little bit. Yay! I am sparkly~! 🌟😄🌟

Ettang Modeling Take-Out Cups

I know for sure these are old as I got them from Memebox years ago, when they still shipped to Canada. Another way to tell is that Ettang has since changed the packaging for these modeling cups. But whatever, this is in powder form, so it should be less prone to growing molds and stuff. 😐

Mixing up these modeling masks is kind of hard because you can either make it too runny or too thick. I somehow manage to add enough water each time I use it. Yay me! 😆I would say the consistency you want is that of a thick paste, kind of like a very thick stiff peak.

I like these modeling cups as you can just slap on the paste very thickly, dry within 10 minutes, peel it off and stuff it back into the cup for easy disposal! Anyways, the key to applying the mask is to apply in a thick but even layer! All of the thicker areas came off with ease, but the thinner areas were a bit harder to remove.😖 I had to use some cleansing water to aid the process.

The modeling mask made my skin feel so soft and plump!😍 I had similar results from the previous "flavours" I tried from Ettang and I really wish these are a bit more accessible. 😖

That's all the samples I got to try this time! I think I am going to do reviews of samples as I try them and see how that goes. Or should I do it on Instagram😕❓❔

Choosy Night Lip Treatment

I done review on the Pure Smile lip treatments before, and was saddened to see that Pure Smile has decided to discontinue the line. So imagine my surprise when I saw a post on r/AsianBeauty stating there is a new lip treatment that is comparable to it. And to make it even better, the eBay page has it on sale for 1+1. I snagged it up rightaway! However, this wasn't offered through eBay Canada so I just did it through eBay.com and those lip treatments were on their way to me!

The seller was nice and included some point pads as free gifts. I was quite mifted as to why I connected Pure Smile with Choosy. Then I realized, all of the eBay listings label it as Pure Smile Choosy. NO WONDER!!!!

Anyways, moving on.

To make things easier, I'll refer to the Choosy Night lip treatments as the Choosy lip treatments and the Pure Smile Snail lip treatments as the Pure Smile treatments.

The Choosy and Pure Smile has similar packaging, with similar sizes. The Choosy treatments are 10ml each, and the Pure Smile treatments are 10g each, which is essentially 10ml as well.

The lip treatments comes in two flavours, milk vanilla and bergamot. I got one of each. Bergamot is a type of orange, so I expected it to smell like orange. It actually smells like those cheap No Name brand vanilla wafers. That cheap but super sweet vanilla smell with a tinge of tartness to it. I like it actually. Whereas milk vanilla smells of very sweet artificially flavoured coconut treats.

The Pure Smile treatments came in a variety of flavours. They were milk, honey, assorted fruits, chocolate and strawberry. I only got the milk as I couldn't tolerate the honey smell from its lotions and loved the sweet milk scent.

Both treatments has the same applicator, which is not surprising given how they are the same packaging. But this is where the similarities end.

Difficulties in photographing transparent product on a white background while using flash.. =__=

The Pure Smile treatment comes out in a thick transparent gel like consistency. It goes on sticky, and remains for hours. I always put it on when I leave the house for the day, as I tend to roll around too much during my sleep and I don't want to rub it everywhere. Every time I put it on, I have to make sure I have my hair tied up, as it it will cling onto everything that comes into contact with it. It is THICK! But it does wonders. Every time I use it, my lips are just so much more moisturized afterwards.

The Choosy lip treatment is different. It is also a night treatment but it doesn't perform as well. It is a tad bit opaque compared to Pure Smile. It is more of a thinner consistency, and it is quite slippery so it applies more like a lip gloss. I would apply a thin coat of it over the Peripera velvet lip tint for a nice glossy look. I would also apply a thin coat over bare lips right before I leave the house. By the time I reach the office, which takes about 1.5 hours, the treatment is pretty much "gone".

2.5 hours later, no drinking or eating. 

Let me put it this way, I would always want to but won't actually put on the Pure Smile treatment when I leave the office, despite how much I wanted to. This is because I know, despite the 1.5 hour travel time, the treatment will still be sticky as hell when I get home. This wouldn't be a problem except the fact that I have a super hairy dog named Panda, and one of the first things I do when I get home is to shower him in kisses. So if I had the Pure Smile treatment on, my lips would have been covered in dog hair, or as I like to refer to it, Panda hair, and some of it would have rubbed off on my dog.

On the other hand, I have absolutely no problem with putting on the Choosy treatment before I go home. In fact, I often find myself reaching for it while I wait for the bus. This is because I know it will most likely be "gone" by the time I reach home and I don't have the risk of being covered in Panda hair.

Why did I put gone in quotation marks you may ask? Well, I am not sure if it actually sunk in, I am not sure what actually happens to it. I don't eat or drink while on the bus ride so it can't have rubbed off. I also know it haven't sunk in as my lips often feels dry when I get home. So it must have evaporated? I am not sure. Hence the "gone" reference.

Overall, I would say this is not a replacement for the beloved Pure Smile lip treatment, despite being made by the same company. But the highlight of these treatments is that it is not sticky and can act as a nice light gloss for everyday wear.

Masks #9 - Face, Hands & Feet!

In early September, one of my very best friends got married and I trudged up to Edmonton to be a part of the celebration. This is one of the once in a blue moon occasions that I would put on make up and nail polishes. So I brought up some masks with me to use and to make sure I have no dry patches. We all know how makeup loves to accentuate dry patches. ^__-

Dr.Morita Hyaluronic Acid Essence Mask

This is a Taiwanese mask I picked up at the local Chinese supermarket. I read a review somewhere saying the brand is pretty good, and I am a sucker for Hyaluronic Acid so of course I have to buy it. I can't remember the exact price, but it was under $15 for a box of 10 silk masks. Yes.. They are silk masks! They don't advertise it as silk mask except for one little blurb under the "24 hours continuous hydration" on the front. I actually didn't see it until I looked at the above image while typing. Oops..

 Ingredients: As per the package. 

Water, Dipropylene Glycol, Glycosyl Trehalose/Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate (Trehalose), Xanthan gum, Methylparaben, Phenoxyethanol, D-Panthenol, Hydrolyzed Collagen, Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid, Luffa Cylindrica Root Extract, Cucumis Sativus Extract, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Sodium Hyaluronate, Algae Extract Ceramide 3; Ceramide 6 II; Ceramide 1; Phylosphingosine; Cholesterol; Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate; Carbomer; Xanthan Gum, Fragrance

CosDNA Analysis

It looks like only Carbomer may cause some irritations, but it's on a scale of 1 so it shouldn't be too bad. 

On a side note, I find it funny how they don't have the full ingredients list in Chinese but rather just the star ingredients. But in English, they list out everything. Must be the FDA rules or something so they can sell it outside of Taiwan. 

That mask was in clear runny essence that is just like water. It doesn't have any strong discernible scent so that is always a plus in my book. The mask is drenched but is not dripping everywhere.

What I love about the mask is that it's got long flaps around the jaw area, such so that it reaches my ears. Yay!! That has always been my problem with masks. I don't have enough to reach there and I feel bad for those patches of skin. Never get any love. Well, not anymore! Dr.Morita to the rescue! :P There was also enough essence for me to spread on my neck too!

**I took a picture of the pearl paper instead of the mask as it was really late by the time I took it off and I couldn't sneak into the bathroom without waking up my friend's family. So this photo I took of the pearl paper while I was putting it on will suffice.**

In the spirit of Halloween, I looked like some kind of masked creature with the pearl paper. XD

I took the mask off after 30 minutes as it was starting to dry in spots and I don't want reverse osmosis to occur. My cheeks feels fine to the touch but my forehead was a bit sticky. Took quite a bit of time before it was all absorbed in and the stickiness went away.

As for result, my skin felt supple and soft. Though the next morning, the CC cream I applied drew my attention to a few dry spots on my cheeks. So I guess this mask isn't as moisturizing as it's advertised to be?

All in all, I wouldn't mind buying this mask again. It have no offensive scent, it reaches to my ears and it's relatively cheap for a local purchase of silk mask. *I am looking at you Lovemore! Same price for half the amount and similar results*


Pure Smile Portion Pack Hand Pearl

This was a mask I got from Memebox, from back in the day. I haven't really thought about it until I started to pack. I don't usually do hand masks as I can't even watch a show without doing something with my hands. So I thought what the hey, might as well look nice for my friend's special day.

 Ingredients: It's all in Korean and I am just not up to translating ingredients right now. 

This is essentially a mask in glove form with an exterior liner to prevent the essence from leaking. Unfortunately for me, it leaked anyways. From the back of the package, it seems like the two gloves are supposed to be attached and you cut them apart when you are ready to use them. But mine was already separated when I took them out of the package, so some essence leaked out. 

As you can see from above, it's just a thin white plastic outer shell with a soft mesh inside. The essence has a thick consistency, almost like a gel, such that it would stay put inside the mask, most of the time. The mask has a perfume smell that reminds me of a shampoo I used to have a long long time ago. But it's not intolerable or anything like that. Just drove me crazy for a while because I can't recall exactly what it reminded me of.

Kekeke, jokes aside. I don't think this mask is made for those with big hands. It looks big but as you can see, my hand fill up about 90% of the mask, and I got small hands. So if you got a bigger hand, this may not be for you. 

I had the mask on for about 30 minutes before I had enough of not being able to move my hands or touch the phone screen. My hands were very moisturized and feels softer and supple. My cuticles looked so much happier too! It didn't leave any weird oily feeling on my hand so that's a plus. Though I do recommend doing this before bed and go straight to sleep afterwards. I went to wash my hands, and I can feel some of that essence washing away.. T___T

I liked this mask but being a person who loves to use her hands, I don't think I can sit through another 30 minutes of not doing anything with my hands. I wouldn't buy it again but if I am gifted some and have a special occasion coming up, I wouldn't mind forcing myself through it again.

Holika Holika  Baby Silky Foot Mask Sheet

**WARNING: You will see feet.. My gross feet to be exact. So if you are squeamish about these kind of things, please skip!!*

I also did a foot mask at the same time. This is from a Memebox, again. I linked the Canadian Holika Holika website above but I think these are pretty easy to find. They are even on Amazon. So just look on your favourite e-tailers' site and see if it's available.

 Ingredients: As per the website.

Look Ma! I am a butterfly!!! 

These booties came still attached, thankfully. All I needed to do was tear it down the center along the perforate line. This is similar to the hand masks. A plastic outer shell with softer mesh inner shell and the essence between the two shells. 

The essence has a strong smell to it. When it first hit my nose, it was very floral, then it became chemical very quickly. I think it must be the alcohol. There wasn't too much essence floating in the mask, but just enough for it to stick to my feet. 

I just wish there was some tape to hold it. So the openings aren't wide open and I can't do anything besides sit with my feet planted to the ground. <- that is my number one reason why I don't do feet masks. I like to sit with cross legged since my legs are too short to reach the ground most of the time. 

I have size 6 feet, and you can see there's quite a bit of room left at the heel area. So I would imagine this would be good for anyone up to size 8 or 9??? 

Before the mask, you can see my feet are pretty dry, especially around the heel area. I don't like to moisturize my feet because the greasy lotion feeling grosses me out and makes me feel uncomfortable all night. Yes yes I know, I should moisturize anyways. I am trying to. Slowly.. 

I left the mask on for two hours since I figured my feet need that extra moisture. Despite having the openings wide open, the mask was still really moist afterwards. Don't forget to massage all those extra essence into your dry areas before taking your feet out.

I found my feet to be feeling moist moisturized. No necessarily softer, that needs more work than just a single use mask. But it felt moisturized and it didn't make my feet feel oily or anything. It did good enough work given what it has to work with. I am happy with the results.

That being said, I'll probably not repurchase this. I just don't like hands and feet masks that prevent me from moving around. I'll use them if I am gifted them but I won't go out of my way to buy them.
