[CLARINS/MY CLARINS] - RE-FRESH Hydrating Beauty Mist

Happy holidays everyone! I hope you have a wonderful holiday with loved ones!

Today, I am going to review the Clarins RE-FRESH Hydrating Beauty Mist, which was provided to me for review earlier in the year by Chickadvisor. It was provided complimentary in exchange for my honest opinion. So everything stated in this review is 100% my own opinion.

Let's move on to the review.

COMPANY BACKGROUND

Clarins was founded by Jacques Courtin-Clarins in 1954, in response to his customers' requests to sell a massage oil that he has developed. The brand has since broaden its offerings, ranging from cosmetics and makeup, body care products and perfumes. At on point, it also offered clothing under one of its subsidiary. It is widely seen at high-end department store counters in Canada, and selected pharmacies.

The brand continues the founder's motto of "Do more, do better, and enjoy doing so", in which led them to become world leader in cosmetics, skincare, make-up and fragrance. The Clarins group has its own Research and Development laboratories, and it takes roughly three years before a new product is developed.

You can read more about the brand's history and their values here and here.

FUNCTION

The My Clarins line is their newest line, which are targeted towards the 18-30 year old, with more focus on being vegan friendly and consisting primarily of natural ingredients. You can read more of the line's philosophy here.

The My Clarins RE-FRESH Hydrating Beauty Mist is designed to refresh and hydrate the skin. It would soften, soothe and relax the skin, which will promote a healthier looking and more radiant skin. This also helps to prep the skin for any treatments.

So in a sense, it is like a toner being delivered in the form of a mist. Since toners are supposed to be used before you use anything else after a cleanser. This is because when the skin is wet, it absorbs better than when it is dry. By having the toner, or in this instance the mist, on your skin, it helps the absorption of any products you throw on afterwards.

PACKAGING

The mist comes in a white glass bottle with a red plastic pump. It has minimalist design, with red and black lettering on the bottle. With this design, I can see how it is geared toward the younger generation, with their taste leaning toward being vegan friendly, socially conscious and have simple designs that looks sleek and fresh.

I liked the pump initially, as it produces a really really fine mist. I love using because it honestly feels like it is coming from an aerosol bottle, where I couldn't feel the mist making contact with my face at all.

Now, you are probably wondering, why did she say initially?

Well.. It's because that was when the pump worked well. It worked very well for a month or so, then I slowly noticed that the nozzle was becoming a bit plugged up. It was still sending out a fine mist, but there's also a stream of mist dripping down my hand. It wasn't much, but I was a bit sadden by it. I wish I cleaned the nozzle more to keep it clear so it wouldn't get clogged up. If I didn't encounter the partial clogging of the nozzle, I would have ranked it as my favourite misting mechanism of all times.

INGREDIENTS

Ingredients List (IL): AQUA/WATER/EAU. BUTYLENE GLYCOL. GLYCERETH-26. PROPANEDIOL. GLYCERIN. COCOS NUCIFERA (COCONUT) FRUIT JUICE. PPG-26-BUTETH-26. PROPYLENE GLYCOL. PHENOXYETHANOL. PEG-40 HYDROGENATED CASTOR OIL. SODIUM BENZOATE. ETHYLHEXYLGLYCERIN. PARFUM/FRAGRANCE. CITRIC ACID. DISODIUM EDTA. SODIUM CITRATE. FICUS CARICA (FIG) FRUIT EXTRACT. MALPIGHIA EMARGINATA (ACEROLA) SEED EXTRACT. ROBINIA PSEUDOACACIA FLOWER EXTRACT. RHODODENDRON FERRUGINEUM EXTRACT. POTASSIUM SORBATE [V3145A]

CosDNA

This was taken from the Clarins website here, as I have recycled the box the mist came in. I do appreciate the fact that they included a little disclaimer on the bottom stating that the IL may change or vary from time to time, and that the IL on the box should be most up-to-date.

The website boasts about how it is made with coconut water, botanical extracts like alpenrose, fig and acerola seeds. But if you look at the IL closely, you'll realize that coconut water is the only thing that's higher in concentration in terms of all the botanical and "natural" ingredients.

A tip I learned is to pick out the ingredient called phenoxyethanol (which I highlighted above), which is a synthetic preservative that is used in concentrations only up to 1%. Going by that and how the IL are often listed based on the concentration, often required by law. Anything after phenoxyethanol is less than 1% in concentration.

Going with that, you can see how the fig fruit extract, acerola seed extract and alpenrose extract are all much later than phenoxyethanol. In fact, fragrance is higher on the list than the botanical extracts. Don't get me wrong here, some products work well even at a smaller concentration. But it just makes me wonder how much benefits do you really get from those botanical extracts when they are so low.

It also makes me just side eye their 88% natural ingredients claim, since well.. What do you think when you first see that claim? Do you think that means 88% of plant based ingredients? Because I have a feeling that the 88% is mostly that coconut water, and also includes any chemicals that are naturally occurring. That means the claim isn't wrong, but I find it misleading.

SCENT

This has a strong scent to it. I can't really describe it but it reminded me of someone's cologne from the office. It was strong and gave me a headache. It does have a fruity note to it, but then it has this note to it that I can't quite identify and I do not like.

The thing is, if it's strong but it dissipates quickly, then I don't mind it. But this lingers. I couldn't cover it with other products, and it sticks onto clothing too. I accidentally got it on a shirt, and I could smell it days later and was left wondering what the heck I touched before realizing it was the mist.

I personally think the fragrance is too strong for me and too much for something that's supposed to be all "green" and "natural" and vegan friendly.

PERFORMANCE

Due to the great design in the misting mechanism, it creates a really fine mist onto the skin. Which I found to sink in quickly and definitely helps to soothe and cool down the skin. It is definitely a welcoming product on a hot summer day. I found that it did leave my skin feeling very hydrated as well.

But, I have been slapping on other products very quickly to help cover the scent, I haven't focused too much on how effective the mist is. I just noticed how plump my skin felt after the spritzes and that's about it. But honestly, I don't think a mist will help deliver much besides hydrating your skin and prepping it for the additional products.

OVERALL THOUGHTS

Overall, I am a bit meh about the mist. I love the mist mechanism and how cooling it is. That's about it. I didn't like how strong the scent is and the ingredients list didn't wow me at all. The glass bottle gives a really nice feel but at the same time, weighs it down and makes it a bit clunky to carry around in a bag.

In the end, I gave it away to a friend simply because I really didn't enjoy the scent whereas she liked it and would enjoy the product more than me.

It comes as no surprise that I would not repurchase the mist at all. For the price tag of CAD $22, I honestly would be buying my favourite mist of OneOSeven Rose Vinegar Water which is a bit more expensive at USD $22.10 but I gladly go through all of it very very quickly and it really helps to cool and hydrate the skin every summer. Jolse often has it on sale as a 1+1 deal so it's even cheaper. You can check out my review here. As for moisturizing mist, I absolutely love the Klairs Fundamental Ampule Mist , which is even more expensive at USD $27 but gosh it is soo moisturizing. You can read the review here.
